Girlguiding North West England launched a service project, to run from 2011 for at least 3 years.
The project is based in an area called Imlil which is in the high Atlas mountains. It is a community service project which each year will work on a number of different small projects in the area.
One constant element is working with a women’s group who meet on a regular basis to try to improve their lives. We will teach them ways in which they can make money to support themselves, such as handicrafts they can make and sell, or share other skills like using a computer, self esteem or personal development.
We will also undertake a variety of physical projects, such as planting trees, helping to dig irrigation channels, building small structures, painting things.
There may also occasionally be material things which the womens’ group need and we may choose to raise money for these – for example, a new computer.
The girls who participate will also have the opportunity to experience what daily life is like for a woman in Morocco, by spending a day with some of the women in the group.
We hope that the womens’ group will send us some of their handicrafts to sell at Region events and we will send them any money we raise, so if you see our stall please do buy something to support them.
