GUIDE DESIGNS CENTENARY PENGUIN FOR TRAIL IN LIVERPOOL
26 NOV 2009
Over 200 penguins are taking over Liverpool City Centre for a public art event throughout Christmas and the New Year. Across the city businesses, artists and community groups have helped to create individual designs for the Go Penguin art explosion.
Girlguiding North East Liverpool Division created a Centenary Penguin design for the public art display. The winning design was created by 11 year old Guide, Alice Walker-Jones who is a member of 291st Liverpool Guides. Alice said: ‘I’m really happy I won the competition and now have my design on one of the penguins. It is a really fun project and I’m looking forward to exploring the city penguin trail with all my guiding friends.’
Division Commissioner Carolyn Seeley said: “It is great that Girlguiding UK is represented in this display. All the girls were so excited and created some fantastic designs. The winning design is bright, loud, colourful and above all designed by one of our girls which is what we are all about.”
Girlguiding UK launched its Centenary celebrations in September 2009 and they are set to end celebrating the Centenary year in October 2010. Many different events are taking place throughout the year to mark this special occasion.
Go Penguins is a public art explosion of unrivalled proportions. Over 200 individual works of art will adorn and animate Merseyside’s streets throughout Christmas and New Year, bringing a very special brand of festive sparkle to the holiday season. Commissioned by Liverpool City Council for their Year of the Environment, Go Penguins is the signature event of the city’s festive programme, A Winter’s Trail.
Many of the penguins have something to say about climate change – simple, easy to follow hints on how we might all be a little bit greener. Many others are just stunning to look at - all of them are fun!
Why not visit the trail and send in your pictures with the Centenary Penguin!
