GIRL GUIDING ISLE OF MAN LAUNCH CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS WITH BIGGEST BIRTHDAY BASH
28 SEPT 2009
Across the Island Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Senior Section Members and their leaders joined over 550,000 girls and women in a huge birthday bash marking the launch of Girlguiding UK’s Centenary celebrations. Here on the Isle of Man there were six different action packed events over the weekend of the 5th and 6th September. These were just a few of the hundreds of launch parties that took place at the same time throughout the UK to mark the first 100 years of guiding.

Girls had the chance to have a go at horse riding in Ramsey, try their hand at archery, watch a Punch and Judy show on Peel beach and build 100 sandcastles, test their nerve on a climbing wall in Onchan, watch a magic show in Douglas, take a turn at Irish dancing and in the South the girls had two bouncy castles and an impromptu fly past by the Red Arrows. And of course, there were lots of birthday cakes!
Sandy Kermode, Island Commissioner, said:
“Wow what a fantastic start to our 100 Years of Guiding Celebrations!! Our Celebrations are guaranteed to be enjoyable experiences that will provide ‘Mountain Top Moments’ to be remembered for years to come!”
Although the weather across the weekend was mixed it certainly didn’t dampen the party spirit. “What came across at all the parties was that the girls were having so much fun” said Ira Luxton, Press & PR Advisor. “There were beach parties, fairy parties, mad hatter’s tea parties.”

Sharon Lannigan, Ballanard District Commissioner said “The support from local businesses has been great. Lin from the Fairy Shop has been our very own Fairy Godmother supplying gifts for our party bags and even writing a special poem to commemorate the achievements of girl guiding.”
Chloe Midghall of St Ninians Brownies said “the best bit about Brownies is making new friends”. Holly Shimmin of All Saints Brownies said her favourite thing about Brownies was “learning new things”.
Girlguiding Isle of Man wishes to thank ; Su Livesy, Neil Simpson, Ernie Runciman, Peter Brew, Kelly Graham, James Corkhill, Liam Reynolds Photography & Icon-imaging for their photographic services in recording these momentous events.
