3RD UPHOLLAND BROWNIES WIN PRIZE IN NATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION
11 NOV 2009
3rd Upholland Brownies from Wigan have won the Brownie 1st prize in a national photography competition run by Girlguiding UK and Plan UK. The competition had over 3,000 photo entries from nearly 100 guiding groups around the UK.
Plan UK’s ‘Take a photo, make a difference’ project is part of Girlguiding UK: Changing the World, a year long partnership with 18 national charities. Girls across the UK have been taking part in Plan’s activities to find out what issues the girls in developing countries face and have voiced their feelings on these important messages through photography.
3rd Upholland Brownies photo is titled ‘Because I am a Girl Triptych’ they chose to theme their photograph around these differences e.g. meal times, washing and general household jobs. They wanted to highlight the dramatic differences between the two lives and chose to make half of the photograph in black and white and half in colour to reflect the inequalities. The unit will have their photo displayed alongside other entries in an exhibition at the Association of Photographers Gallery in London at the end of October as well as winning a state of the art camera.
Unit Leader, Laura Lovell said, ‘It is overwhelming to think that we have won this National Competition. The Brownies were so creative with their planning, staging and shooting of the photographs. We followed the project pack provided by Plan International and the Brownies were shocked by some of the BIG differences between their lives and the lives of girls in Liberia. The results were amazing and it is a huge honour to win this competition in the Brownie category.’
Marie Staunton from Plan UK said: “We are delighted to partner with Girlguiding UK to celebrate their centenary year with a photography project that helps to promote Plan’s Because I am a Girl campaign and the rights of girls in some of the world’s poorest countries, as well as helping them to lift themselves out of poverty”
