LOCAL GIRLS COMPLETE ‘POLAR’ ADVENTURE
05 FEB 2009
On Saturday 23 January 2010, more than 100 Girl Guides, Senior Section members and their leaders braved the elements as they took part in a unique polar-themed overnight outdoor camp in Disley, Stockport.
This ultimate adventure, which was attended by girls from units across Manchester, kicked off what promises to be an action-packed Centenary year for Girlguiding UK in 2010. After a spectacular regional launch to the year in Heaton Park in September 2009, this was a further opportunity to celebrate all that guiding has achieved in helping girls and young women to develop their potential over the last 100 years.

The ‘polar adventurers’ arrived on Saturday morning to set up the campsite and then could choose from numerous themed activities including crazy-car driving, archery, seasonal crafts and interactive electronic winter sports competitions. The girls also enjoyed indoor spa treatments and were surprised by a giant, inflatable snow globe on site which they could play inside. After a good night’s sleep under canvas, the event was brought to an end with a
Penguin-themed outdoor challenge on Sunday morning.
It was also a fantastic chance to spend time with existing friends and make new friends as Eva from 6th Chorlton Guides confirmed, “I love the theme and it’s actually just great to go camping with all my friends and to set up the site ourselves. We all cheered when we managed to put our tents up, we were so pleased”.
Event organiser, Mel Price, said “We wanted the girls to have a unique experience and responded to their request for a winter camp. It’s been fantastic to see them come together from different units, make new friends and try activities they have chosen that they haven’t done before.”
