STATEMENT
Lancashire South is in an area with rich heritage, moving confidently forward, where neighbourliness and a warm welcome are strong; with an Education Authority recognised as one of the most progressive in the country and above average exam results; where there is lots of open land with very pleasant countryside and a unique range of wetland habitats for wildlife.
Wigan rose to fame when George Orwell wrote ‘The road to Wigan Pier’ and the pier is still there today. A world wide export from Wigan is ‘Uncle Joe’s mint balls’ which are still made in the town.
Lancashire South was created from three nearby Counties on the 1 April 2007. The county badge reflects the heritage of Wigan with the pit wheel at the top of the badge and the Lancashire rose at the bottom (South). The blue on the badge forms the letter ‘S’ and represents the water element that runs throughout the County.
