Top Tips for Plastic Free Living

For Plastic Free July, our Region Social Media Adviser Clare shares her top ten tips for plastic-free living!

  1. Take a close look at your daily routine to establish what plastic you do use, and where swaps could be made. There’s a lot more to plastic use than first meets the eye.
  2. Pick one room at a time and think about how you can reduce plastic in that one room. For example, bees wax wraps and reusable freezer bags in the kitchen, and shampoo bars and bamboo toothbrushes in the bathroom.
  3. Plan ahead - think about what you need before you go somewhere. If you’re going out for coffee, remember to pack your reusable cup. If you’re off to the shops make sure you have your reusable bags.
  4. Don’t be afraid to try swaps that might seem a bit strange or ‘gross’. Cloth nappies or menstrual cups might sound unappealing but they’re great ways to reduce disposable plastic waste, plus they save you money too!
  5. Buy clothing and shoes made from natural fibres or, even better, consider buying second hand. There are plenty of sites that even sell designer brands second hand!
  6. See if your local area has a zero waste shop. You can take your own reusable containers to be filled and avoid the heavily packaged items sold in normal supermarkets.
  7. Even in a normal supermarket, it’s possible to reduce your plastic waste. Buy lose fruit and veg, avoid plastic-packaged multipacks, and buy the biggest bottles/bags you can reduce the amount of plastic used over time.
  8. If you’re able to, say no to disposable straws and cutlery - pack your own or, even better, bring your own lunch to work.
  9. Don’t be overwhelmed by what can seem like a big challenge at first. Start small and slowly make more changes. One swap is better than no swap!
  10. Talk to your friends and family about how they can reduce plastic waste too. Share this so as many people see it as possible!
