A brave Rainbow leader has taken part in an abseil to raise funds for a homeless charity.
Ashleigh, 22, leader, abseiled down Liverpool Cathedral on Saturday 17 August 2019 for Wirral Ark, as part of the community action aspect of her Queen’s Guide Award - the highest award achievable in Girlguiding, which revolves around setting challenges to help young women gain life-long skills.
Ashleigh worked with Wirral Ark – a charity that exists to provide accommodation for the homeless in Wirral. The unit leader has spent the past year fundraising for the project and even did a Santa Dash in December 2018; she also created a badge to sell. From this, Ashleigh has raised £400, to go with the £225 that she has raised with her Just Giving page, and £200 from small fundraising activities, taking her to £825 - with some badges still left to sell!
She said: “Doing the event was so exhilarating and a great opportunity to support a charity that is close to my heart. Seeing the homeless has always broken my heart as everyone should have a safe place to stay, with a roof over their head. The community action aspect of my Queen’s Guide has given me the confidence to try new things and make a true difference”
Pauline Cox, Fundraiser at Wirral Ark, said: “Ashleigh has been such a fantastic support to Wirral Ark, from creating her “No place like home” badge, which is not only generating funds for the organisation, but raising awareness of the plight of the homeless, to her fundraising challenge activities including the abseil down Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral. All at Wirral Ark are extremely appreciative for the support we’ve received from Ashleigh over the year.”
Girlguiding North West England encourages girls to challenge themselves to achieve their goals across a range of different disciplines. Supporting girls’ with community action projects means they can get more involved with the world around them and gain a greater understanding of it through practical research projects of their choice.
