We were inundated with lots of amazing designs in our recent mascot competition and it was very difficult for our judging panel - which included our Region Chief Commissioners - to choose!
But now, with a very big drum roll, we are very excited to announce that the winner of the competition is Madeleine from 1st Parbold & Dalton Guides.
Madeleine was honoured to win the competition! She said “This is the first time I've won a competition and I'm so excited. Thanks so much for choosing my design - now I'm very excited to see how you use it!”
Guide leader Jean Holmes told Madeleine’s unit about the competition whilst they were celebrating Diwali, with lots of candles burning, and it was this that gave Madeleine the inspiration for her design. “I thought of a candle because it's a nice symbol to represent Guides. Like a guiding light. I also thought it's something that is recognised by everyone, a nice symbol through these strange times and could be seen as hope. Using colouring pencils for her design, she said “I didn't do any other designs and that was the only drawing I did!”
We asked our competition entrants to give their mascot a name, and for her mascot, Madeleine chose the name Lumi, saying “A candle is illuminous which gave me the idea for the name Lumi. I think it's cheeky and cute.”
Madeleine should have been going to Malta in August on an international trip with the Girlguiding ICE team, working with Friends of the Earth to create a community garden, but owing to the pandemic the trip was cancelled. She said “It's wearing an international neckerchief. I copied my own. So I didn't get to wear it, but now it's on my candle ha ha ha!”
Throughout the pandemic, like many Girlguiding units, 1st Parbold & Dalton Guides has been meeting virtually, maintaining some vital normality in girls lives. Madeleine said “Guides has been fun through lockdown. Each week we have a zoom meeting and it’s good to still see all my leaders and friends. I can't wait to get back to the school hall though and see them all in person!”
