The Motivate Project: Empowering Girls to Engage with Sports

Sport attracts many young people and can provide a springboard to social action. Just over half of young people say they prefer sport to other volunteering pursuits. Yet, 26% of girls aged 7-21 feeling like PE is more tailored to boys, while gender stereotypes affect their selection of academic sport (Girls Attitude Survey, 2017); we want to challenge these perceptions and empower more girls to take the lead in sports

With the support of The Sport England Potentials Fund, together, we aim to unlock the potential that young people have whilst also developing the skills and experience they need for their own future.

Following the successful pilot of Motivate in Greater Manchester West, we’re now keen to roll out Sport Young Leader training days across the region- in conjunction with the Leader Programme Training Days.

Our pilot training had great feedback which is why we want to bring it to as many rangers as possible.

“The course opened my mind”- Jasmine McAvoy, 15, Ranger

“It’s really good for future opportunities and skill-building” – Emily James, 15, Ranger

What is Motivate?

Motivate, is our brand new sports project funded by Sports England and the #iwill fund. Sports Development Worker, Sue Whitehead has the pleasure of leading the social action project in collaboration with Region Sports Adviser, Anne-Marie Knott.

Anne-Marie Knott, Region Sports Adviser, said: “This is a fantastic project that combines sport and guiding, and preparing girls for the ever-changing industry. In business, there are three types of people, those who make it happen, those who watch it happen, and those who wonder what happened."

We’re now looking to recruit and train Rangers and Young Leaders (14-18 years), in sports leadership and support them in developing and delivering a sports social action project in their local community; this would link with local partners/sports and clubs/organisations.

Do you want to develop new skills, take the lead in sport, and face a fresh challenge? Become a sports leader.
