The ‘Going away with’ Scheme

What is the going away with scheme?
The going away with scheme is a practical qualification you can earn to be able to take young members away on residentials. The first four modules help you understand the health and safety, planning, administration and health/first aid of the trip. These modules equip you with your going away with licence, qualifying you to take girls away overnight or for 2 or more nights where catering, facilities and the programme are provided (a PGL residential or similar).
There are 5 further modules to the scheme. The next 4 should be completed if your trip is planned for 2 or more nights and is self-lead. This means you will be planning the catering, programme and activities for the full duration.
The final module is to be completed if you plan to take girls on trips abroad.
With the scheme being a practical qualification, you need to plan and run the event whilst providing evidence for everything you have done. You will have a mentor who is assigned to support you and will attend the events to assess you before, during and after the residential.
The 2026 Residential Challenge
Last year we set the goal of getting 5 new ‘Going away with’ scheme residential licenses in every county. Our region absolutely smashed it, with an incredible 110 new residential licences!
Residential experiences are where lifelong guiding memories are made. This year, we want more young members to experience going away, so the Adventure Team have set a new challenge:
26% in 2026
By the end of the year, we want 26% of young members in each county to have been on at least one residential trip during the year; whether that is for one night, two nights or even more!
